Spain secured their historic fourth European Championship title by defeating England 2-1 in a dramatic Euro 2024 final held on Sunday at Berlin's Olympiastadion. Nico Williams, one of Spain’s standout players throughout the tournament, broke the deadlock early in the second half with a precise finish into the bottom corner, set up by the 17-year-old sensation Lamine Yamal. England responded midway through the second half with an impressive left-footed strike from Cole Palmer outside the penalty area, briefly leveling the score at the German capital's iconic venue. However, Spain clinched victory in the dying minutes of regulation time as Mikel Oyarzabal tapped in a perfectly delivered pass from Marc Cucurella, sealing their triumph in a thrilling final. This victory marks Spain's fourth European title, adding to their previous successes in 1964, 2008, and 2012. Meanwhile, England endured another heartbreaking defeat in the European Championship final, reminiscent of their loss to Italy on penalties at Euro 2020.
Rodri was honored as the player of the tournament ahead of the trophy presentation at Euro 2024, while Lamine Yamal received the young player of the tournament award. Yamal, who celebrated his 17th birthday on the eve of the final, featured prominently in all seven of Spain's matches in Germany. He led the tournament with four assists and netted a historic goal in the semifinals against France, becoming the youngest scorer in Euro history. England's quest for a major men's international trophy continues, having last won the World Cup in 1966. Following the final, King Charles III shared a supportive message for the England players on social media platform X (formerly Twitter): "Though victory eluded you tonight, my wife and I, along with all my family, urge you and your support team to hold your heads high. Anyone who has participated in sports at any level understands the profound disappointment of coming so close to victory. We extend heartfelt sympathy while also congratulating Spain. "Please know that reaching the European Championship final is a tremendous achievement, bringing pride to a nation that will continue to cheer for the Three Lions today and in the many successes that undoubtedly lie ahead."
